Increasingly these days people wishing to take up the profession are finding that apprenticeships, which traditionally were thought to be the way to get a start in the industry, are virtually non-existent due to the understandable reluctance of some existing tattoo studios to share their knowledge and skills, thereby creating what they see as a potential threat to their own business in time.
Fortunately in recent years the public's demand for the tattoo artist's work has grown beyond all expectation. This has resulted in a huge increase in opportunities in the trade that weren't available before, whether it be a desire to gain knowledge of the art, thus putting you in a better position to take on an apprenticeship as the potential employer won't have to waste their time showing you the basics of the mechanics involved and studio hygiene procedures, as all this is covered in detail on the course. The PTA is the only full-time organisation in the UK that is dedicated to teaching the correct procedures and practices of the professional tattoo artist.Courses at The PTA have attracted tattoo students and professional tattooists from around the world: from Europe (including France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Malta, Slovakia, Slovenia and Lithuania), from further afield (including Grenada, Maldives, South Africa and the USA) and closer to home (including Eire, England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales).

Learn How to Tattoo - Training Course Information
The Professional Tattoo Academy® (UK) provides a two week tattoo training course that has been designed to be as interesting and informative as possible. Places are restricted to a maximum of three students per course, which offers similar benefits to one-on-one tuition but with the additional advantage of learning to work in a small team of tattooists, just like in a professional tattoo studio.
Students of The Professional Tattoo Academy® (UK) are expected to give their best efforts during drawing and machine assembly sessions. If they use their course time well, students are guaranteed to leave the academy with a far greater artistic competence than when they arrived.
Each day of the tattoo course is structured in a similar way to other establishments of further education: a prompt start time of 10:00 with a lunch break around midday, followed by more tuition in the afternoon, with the day finishing at 17:00.
After successfully completing the Two Week Professional Course, all students will be awarded a certificate of competence from The Professional Tattoo Academy® (UK). This certificate is recognised by councils in the UK and within the European Union, and therefore is essential for fulfilling the requirements of governing bodies with regard to setting up new tattoo studios.
N.B. In most areas of the UK local legislation demands that a certificate of training is required before permission is granted to open a new tattoo or body piercing business.Pictured above:

The Professional
Tattoo Academy® (UK) comprises
a classroom for theory and lecture purposes, a separate self-contained 'mock' studio with three permanent stations and a comfortable lounge for relaxation.
The PTA is very proud that, since its inauguration back in 2003, a large percentage of its students have now established themselves successfully as full-time professional tattoo artists and body-piercers in the UK and abroad:
